Eight people were arrested on Tuesday in connection to the assault a chief, his assistant and three police officers in Kilifi County.

Police were pursuing for other suspects, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said.

Speaking at Uhuru na Kazi in Mombasa after a security meeting, Dr Matiang’i said police were determined to find and punish all those involved in the attack.

“We were given a list of 12 people. I want assure you that we will arrest them all … we will go after them even if till the end of the year,” he said.

“You cannot attack public officers in such a beastly manner and hope to walk away with it. We are not a savage society.”

The chief, David Kahindi, and the others were injured when stones and empty bottles were hurled at them after they raided a disco matanga in Shariani.

Two mourners grabbed one of the officers with the intention of taking his firearm, prompting the others to fire several times in the air.

Mr Kahindi was injured on the head and legs while the officers suffered head, hip, shoulder and back injuries.

The minister reiterated what he said in Kisauni on Monday- that disco matangas will not be taking place after 11pm.
