David Moyes looks set to return to English football as he is in the main name in the frame to take the reigns at Stoke City. Betfair priced him at evens to replace Gary Rowett, after the former Derby manager was dismissed from his job this morning.

Rowett had been under pressure after Stoke’s miserable start to the Championship season and Moyes has been linked with taking over for several months. Stoke fans showed their frustration last week as they displayed a ‘Rowett Out’ banner at their home defeat to Bristol City.

Now things have finally reached breaking point at the Bet365 stadium and the former gaffer has been dismissed with Stoke 14th in the table. The club have won just eight league games this season in a campaign where they were expected to be challenging for promotion after being relegated from the Premier League last season.

The club have one of the largest budgets in the divisions with players such as Peter Crouch, Ryan Shawcross and Benik Afobe at their disposal they have seriously underperformed this season. Rowett’s sacking comes as no surprise after they failed to beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup, coming off the back of three Championship games without a goal.

Now former United boss David Moyes looks like he is the man to take over and lead the Potters up the table. He was last seen at West Ham rebuilding his reputation by keeping the Hammers in the league before he was let go at the end of the season. Prior to that he of course had disastrous spells at Real Sociedad and of course Manchester United.

Moyes offers a steady pair of hands but he has not managed in the Championship since his time at Preston ended back in 2002. Let’s hope he gets the job and a bit of time to sort out the club, it could be a difficult job for any boss.
