Mathare United Basking in Glory After Frustrating Gor Mahia For the Second Year Running

Mathare United Head Coach Francis Kimanzi has expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the team in its 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia in an entertaining Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played on Sunday 6th January at the MISC Kasarani.

Both teams wasted clear goalscoring chances and Kimanzi believes a draw was a fair result.

“We had our fair share of chances and our opponents did too. We could have won but it did not happen and I think a draw is okay. We were a bit slow at the start but came into the party as the game progressed on,” Kimanzi said after the match,

“It was a very entertaining match. Playing against the reigning champions motivates the lads although I think they should have done better. We are coming from a festive season and I think that also affected the pace of the game from our side as the boys are yet to adjust.” He added.

Dennis Oliech, arguably Kenya’s greatest footballer made his long awaited debut for Gor Mahia, coming on for the final 15 minutes of the game.

Oliech, making his debut for the defending league champions after penning a two year deal earlier in the week, came on for Nicholas Kipkirui as both sides settled for a share of the spoils.

Jacques Tuyisenge gave Gor the lead in the 34th minute via a penalty before Mathare replicated the same with a spot kick of their own in the second half that was converted by Kevin Kimani.

Mathare remains at the top of the log with 14 points having played 6 matches.
