Imagine the pain of knowing a brother is trapped in a foreign country and you have no means of reaching out to him. It is this frustrations that have landed Kenya and Tanzania in a brewing scandal.
What was supposed to be a peaceful rescue mission turned dramatic after Tanzanian authorities held Kenyan human rights activist Hussein Khalid while doing his work.
Tanzanian authorities detained the Haki Africa boss at the Horohoro border post where he had gone to secure the release of Kenyan trader Hamisi Madilo.
Khalid had traveled all the way to the border point to rescue Hamisi who had been held by Tanzanian immigration officials for nine days.
Reports indicate that the immigration officials released Hamisi to his family and Haki Africa’s officials, only to re-arrest him minutes later under unclear circumstances.
This is when Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid demanded to know why the Kenyan trader was re-arrested even after order from Kenyan Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma.
According to report from Haki Africa officials, Hamisi Madilo was moved from the Horohoro border post and secretly taken to Tanga after the re-arrest.
In a presser from Haki Africa to different news rooms, the organisation called for the immediate release of the trader and their boss, Hussein Khalid.
“HAKI Africa demands the immediate release of Hamisi and Hussein Khalid,” said Haki Africa rapid response officer Mathias Shipeta.
