Herrera explains why De Gea has been ‘killing his mind’

Ander Herrera has revealed that David de Gea has been disappointed with Manchester United’s defending since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as manager.

The Red Devils have won all four of their matches under Solskjaer as they collected 12 points towards Champions League qualification, closing the gap on fourth place to six points.

However, their clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Newcastle on Wednesday night was their first under Solskjaer and Herrera explained his relief.

“It was very important for David [ to keep a clean sheet],” said Herrera.

“We wanted to make David happy because he was a little bit disappointed the last games. I had to cope with him after, killing my mind, telling me that he wanted a clean sheet!”

Following their victory at St James’ Park, Solskjaer admitted he wanted the job long-term as he continues to enjoy his role.

“I don’t want to (leave) – of course I don’t,” Solskjaer told reporters. “It’s such a great bunch of players, fantastic atmosphere, but it’s the next game, it’s the next game.

“I’m doing my job as long as I’m here. If you win four you can win another four with this club.

“That’s the challenge, that’s the standard we know. That used to be the challenge from the gaffer (Sir Alex Ferguson).”
