A priest at Segemik Parish in Bomet,has told President Kenyatta to prepare to retire in 2022 and further accused some Jubilee Party officials of misleading President.
Fr Kimutai asked Uhuru to ignore those trying to convince him to stay in power after his term.
“Whether there is going to be a change of the Constitution to create new positions, Uhuru should retire honourably,” Kimutai said, while emphasising that the 2022 succession talk was headed in the wrong direction.
“Some people are forgetting that President Barack Obama retired despite being very young, and now want to mislead Uhuru that he can prolong his stay.”
The catholic priest who in 2015 called for tolerance for gay and lesbian people in Kenya, specifically hit out at Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe and Secretary General Raphael Tuju, saying their recent talks over the upcoming succession was divisive.
He said those claiming that Deputy President William Ruto has a political debt to pay were misleading Kenyans since Ruto himself had said that he was owed nothing by anyone.
“The two party officials should be courteous and show respect to the deputy president. His union with Uhuru in 2013 brought peace and unity,” said Kimutai
The priest pointed out that Uhuru has already left a legacy in the years he has been in power.
He emphasised that it would be foolhardy of him to spoil that legacy by going for another position after his term expires in 2022.
At the same time, Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso said there was need to embrace harmony and tolerance as the country matches on to 2022.
She argued that despite the need to plan ahead politically, more resources should be channelled to development.
In 2015, Fr Ambrose Kimutai warned top clerics against making statements that would isolate the gay people and make them run away from church.
He accused some church leaders of being out of touch with the reality that same-sex relationships were flourishing.
“As a church, we are called to love all people regardless of their sexual orientation,” he said.
Fr Kimutai added that his views over same-sex relationships should not be seen or interpreted as being against the teachings of the church.
