Why Mesut Ozil won’t feature in Liverpool clash

Mesut Ozil is set to miss Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

The German has started the last two matches but was withdrawn at half-time of the draw with Brighton on Boxing Day .

Ozil did train with his teammates on Friday but was not pictured with the rest of the squad when they arrived on Merseyside.

Ozil reportedly complained of pain in his knee after the session and Emery is reluctant to risk him against the Premier League leaders.

The Arsenal star hadn’t started a league match in six weeks before returning to impress in the win over Burnley.

He was handed the captaincy for that encounter and the trip to Brighton before being hooked at the break.

Arsenal boss Emery will also have to wait over a number of key players ahead of the clash.

Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal will all be handed late fitness tests.

Bellerin has missed Arsenal’s last three matches while a hamstring injury has kept Mustafi out.

Monreal also had to sit out the draw with Brighton but Emery will hope to have the trio available against Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten leaders.
