Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has claimed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee administration is the worst ever regime for maize farmers.

The MP who vowed to continue criticising leadership of party he was elected in said under Uhuru’s regime maize farmers had gotten too poor to celebrate Christmas like they had done in previous years.

Speaking in Cherangany on Thursday, December 27, Kutuny said it was sad to note businesses in the North Rift- a grain stronghold for the country, had dwindled because of poor maize prices at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

“There has been little to celebrate. Businesses have not recorded huge sales like others years during such Christmas festivities because farmers are broke. The government prices at NCPB have worsened situation. This is the worst ever Christmas ever witnessed by maize growers,” Kutuny said.

The MP foresaw tough economic times beginning January 2019, saying with lack of money due to lack of reasonable market for maize growers’ produce, many North Rift residents would be unable to pay school fees for their children.

Kutuny who together with Jubilee MPs Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills) and Silas Tiren (Moiben) have come under fire for incessantly pushing for better maize prices vowed not to relent on their push for increased purchase prices at NCPB stores.

“We will continue to push government to do an upward review of maize purchase prices at NCPB stores. We will not take their counter statements lying down. For our farmers to be resuscitated economically maize prices must increase from current KSh 2,300 per 90kgs bag to KSh 3,600 for similar quantity,” he said.
