The call of that behemoth of English football from the north might be bending the ear of Mauricio Pochettino, but the Spurs boss has been served up a reminder of the sort of talent that he’d have to leave behind in north London to take the Manchester United job.
The young right back Kyle Walker-Peters produced three assists in the first half of their game at Wembley this afternoon to sweep aside Bournemouth and keep his side bang in the title race.
At 21, the academy graduate is the youngest player to lay on three assists in a Premier League game since the mercurial Jermaine Pennant did so way back in 2003 during his Leeds days.
While the allure of the spending power that would be available to the Argentine at United, where his is still the bookies’ favourites to replace caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, a young squad bulging with talent would have to be left behind.
Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Harry Winks and Son Heung-min are other players in that squad with their best years ahead of them and the completion of the project he’s put together by hand with a trophy must be a tempting thought.
Add to that the prospect of a sparkling new stadium which, presumably, should be finished sometime before he reaches retirement age, and the unquestioned job security he holds there, and the case for a move doesn’t look so clear-cut.
Would the Argetine swap all that to assume the reigns of an arguably inferior squad, at a club that’s run like the titanic was? It’s hard to see why, but he remains a 7/4 shot to be their next permanent manager.
