Manchester United were told not to bring in Mauricio Pochettino but instead go for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager was sacked on Tuesday when a string of poor performances ended with a 3-1 drubbing by the Reds at Anfield. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been placed in interim charge – though is only set to be at the club until the end of the season with United reportedly targeting Tottenham manager Pochettino.

However, former Spurs and Chelsea star Graham Roberts said United should go for Klopp instead.

The defender’s comments were made on social media when he wrote to Jamie Carragher, after the Anfield legend detailed why United should go for Pochettino.

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino Hotspur exchange words prior to kick off during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at White Hart Lane on August 27, 2016 in London, England.

Roberts tweeted: “Why not go for Klopp @Carra23 ? Perfect for united.”

It was a tweet in response to the former Liverpool defender’s Telegraph column where he explained why Pochettino would be the right man for United.

Carragher wrote: “If Mauricio Pochettino is offered the Manchester United job, he has to take it.

“That is a hard one for Tottenham Hotspur supporters to accept.

“Sadly for them, it is inevitable that they are prey to a more powerful Premier League rival.

“Hearing some arguments against Pochettino moving to Manchester United, I cannot help but think a reality check is needed.

“I do not write this to be disrespectful to Spurs. It goes without saying I am no United fan.

“I am obliged to assess as a neutral, trying to explain why – as the No 1 target – it will be tough for Pochettino to reject Old Trafford.”
