Why Coastal hotel owners are smiling all the way to the bank

Local and international tourists are flooding the  coastal part of Kenya ,thanks to the Christmas festivals which has already kicked off.

Tourism and hospitality industry players in Mombasa County said hotels and guest houses have recorded an average of 20 per cent increase in bookings at this period compared to last year same time.

“Most local visitors are from upcountry, however, there is a significant increase in number of international holidaymakers by 22.4 percent following an increase in number of chartered, international direct flights and local daily flights received in Mombasa,” said Mr. Victor Shitakah, Coast Regional Manager for PrideInn Hotels.

“This year’s holiday has shown positive signs. We have recorded more tourist numbers over the period compared to previous years. Guests, mostly domestic, have arrived while others are on the way,” added Mr. Shitakah.

Hotels have come up with a range of interventions to ensure that guests are safe during this festive period.

“We want to assure all visitors coming to celebrate Christmas that the resort is safe for vacations,” said Mr. Shitakah.

Adequate security is in place to ensure visitors have enjoyable holiday. Hospitality industry players are working hand-in-hand with the county security team and other security agencies to combat any form of crime during this merry making season.

Most of the hotels have their own security arrangement to ensure safety of visitors during the holiday.

“Apart from private security within, we have installed high-tech CCTV cameras and modern screening facilities at all points within our hotels to keep visitors safe and premises secure,” said Mr. Shitakah

Mr. Shitakah thanked the national and county government for efforts to keep Mombasa safe, he however insisted on increased patrols in the entire county especially as we approach Christmas and boxing day.

Kenya tourism and hospitality industry prospects are looking up after the 2014 reprehensible period when terror attacks and travel advisories threatened tourism industry.
