Pangani Girls High School in Nairobi has produced the top candidate for the second year in a row after Irine Juliet Otieno emerged the top candidate in KCSE 2018 with a mean score of 87.644

The results were announced by Education CS Amina Mohammed at the KNEC Headquarters in Nairobi on Friday. This is the second time that the school has produced a top student after Naomi Karimi Nyawira emerged the top candidate in the 2017 exams.

There has been a general improvement in this year’s results with 315 candidates scoring Mean Grade A. There were 142 candidates in last year’s exams.

More worrying for stakeholders though is the fact that only 90, 377 candidates scored a C+ and above out of the more than 660,000 who sat the examination. The exams were done under tight security between 5th November and 20th November.

Ambassador Amina Mohammed revealed that 18 counties had more females than male compared to 17 counties last year.

KNEC Chairman George Magoha said that the exam was a fair reflection of the candidates efforts. He asked children to abstain from taking money from their parents to buy fake exam papers.

“Please allow your brain to work, and even if the help to cheat comes from your blood relative, tell them to go to hell.”

Speaking during the release of the KCSE 2018, Magoha said the government made great milestones in curbing exam cheating.

“The children have gotten what they deserved…children are not guilty…It is the parents and unscrupulous teachers who give the children the money as a form of love,” he said.

During the exam period, more than five KCSE candidates were deregistered by the Kenya National Examination Council and discontinued from sitting the exam on charges of cheating.
