Manchester United star Martial struggled during Mourinho’s time in charge, despite his form improving this season.The duo got off on the wrong foot back in 2016, with the France international furious at the decision to hand his No 9 shirt to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and change his own jersey to No 11.
Manchester United are currently sweating on the future of Martial, with the player yet to sign a contract extension.
The 22-year-old’s current deal expires in 2020 after the club triggered an extension clause in his contract to avoid losing him for nothing.
Many feel Martial will stay now that Mourinho’s head has rolled.
But the Daily Mail say that, inside the dressing room, they have alternative theories.
It is said they believe Martial has been deliberately asking for more money than he warrants.
And that is because they think the forward is still hoping for United to offload him.
Meanwhile, prior to Mourinho’s sacking, Martial’s agent spoke out on his future at the club.
And it does not sound promising.
Philippe Lamboley said: “I am very pessimistic about discussions going positively.
“They have already sent us offers that do not meet our expectations, starting on bases very far from our wishes. We are far from agreement, for the time being.”
Meanwhile, United have named Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their interim boss. The Norwegian will take charge until the end of the season while the club hunt for a new, permanent manager.
Mauricio Pochettino, who wanted Martial to join Tottenham, is the favourite to land the role.
But whether United can secure his signature is something only time will tell.
