Kenyans have began campaigns to save the Mombasa Port after the news which suggests that, if Kenya is unable to pay the debts, China will officially take over the Port.
The online campaigns using the hashtag #SaveMombasaPort has triggered a lot of reactions with some urging the government to terminate the signed contract.
The said report indicated that the auditor general wrote to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director warning him that thee government of China could take over the Mombasa port should the corporation fail to meet its revenue targets.
“The payment arrangement agreement substantively means that KPA’s revenue would be used to pay the Government of Kenya’s debt to China Exim bank if the minimum volumes required for consignment are not met as per schedule one,” reads part of the letter signed by F.T. Kimani for Mr. Ouko.
Although the Auditor General denied these claims saying that they had not released any report Kenyans have joined in the campaign saying that the government should pay up the debt to avoid having the Mombasa Port handed over to China.
Kenyans have even suggested that if it comes to the worst, then the SGR project should be given to them instead of the Mombasa Port.
What is more annoying for Kenyans is the fact that the SGR is said to have recorded losses after its implementation.
Kenyans have criticized the government wondering why they rushed into implementing the project to the extent of getting a loan yet it was not an emergency or priority.

The funds borrowed from the Exim Bank were used to build SGR. China should therefore be talking about taking over SGR and not Mombasa Port. #SaveMombasaPort pic.twitter.com/LHqlxDyetI

The government should terminate the signed agreement on Port of Mombasa acting as collateral and renew it with SGR if arbitration is to be done.
Another corporation can’t be carrying burdens of the other corporation simply because of mediocrity. #SaveMombasaPort pic.twitter.com/txiEVP3FUa— ??Babu Mmoja???????? (@BabuMmoja) December 20, 2018
Where is our pride as a nation?! In forth year my class visited Mombasa port for educational purposes. If the agreement see the Chinese government take over the port, such luxuries will be a thing of the past. #SaveMombasaPort pic.twitter.com/ocNBZxzV6n
