It was a sad morning in Makongeni barracks in Thika moments after a Kenyan Defence Forces officers and his two sons drowned in a quarry after the latter jumped in to try and rescue the juniors.
Reports have confirmed that the officer learnt that his sons, aged 7 and 11, had slipped into the quarry and immediately decided to jump in but it turned out for the worse as they all drowned and their bodies retrieved early Wednesday.
A number of factors in may have contributed to the tragedy, including the fact that the quarry was 30 feet deep – which would have made any rescue attempt a tall order. The bodies remained submerged in the pool of rainwater for hours before KDF’s headquarter’s Disaster Response Unit from Nairobi came to retrieve them.
