Relief to Boda Boda riders as reforms deadline pushed to May

Relief to Boda Boda riders after the government’s  move to push forward the reform deadline.

Boda Boda reforms which included proper training, licences, and wearing of protective gears was seemingly  a hard thing to achieve within the earlier given deadline which was February 1.

Earlier today, reports indicate that the government has extended the deadline for boda boda operators to May next year as stated by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.

Operators will however be required to meet all the requirements as  from May 1, 2019.

The announcement of this extension comes after a consultative meeting with stakeholders including, the Interior ministry, Transport ministry, the parliamentary caucus on transport and the National Transport and Safety Authority.

Sources also indicate that this move is to allow all boda boda operators to fully comply with the regulations.

A couple weeks ago, there were complaints from several boda boda  riders on the cost of meeting all the regulations within the earlier given time.

Following this extension,  no one is expected to use the time limit given as an excuse.

Last month, a task force was put in place to examine the existing policy, institutional, legislative and administrative systems governing public service motorcycle sector.

They were also required to compile comprehensive data regarding safety, reliability, cost and other matters of interest to consumers.

This move was to ensure that order is restored in the boda boda sector. With these regulations put in place, there is hope that this common transport sector will be aligned to the road safety rules.
