Material inatosha! Matiang’i denies claims of police uniform shortage

There were speculations that material used in making the police uniforms had run out and that the government was planning to import new uniforms for the men in blue.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has now refuted claims that the government is planning to import new uniforms for police officers.

“The CS has said that all police uniforms will be procured and made locally to create employment & build the local economy,” read part of a tweet from the Ministry of Interior.

Matiang’i further denied reports that said there was a crisis at the police department where there was not enough fabric in the country to carter for the demand for the new uniforms.

“We have no problem providing our officer with new uniforms, in fact we have already paid for them,” Dr Matiang’i told journalists today.

The Interior CS said that the uniforms will be made by tailors at the National Youth Service adding that the main reason for reviving Rivatex factory in Eldoret was to ensure that local cotton farming and the apparel industry are boosted.

In September, the government launched the revamped police uniforms which are persian blue in colour as part of the change of policy in the National Police Service. So far only a handful of senior officers and a few others from the lower cadre have been supplied with the uniforms that were recently launched by President Kenyatta.

Do you think the police will be able to meet this weeks deadline and get their uniforms?
