Former Manchester United boss linked with a move back at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United assistant coach Mike Phelan has joined the race to become coach of the Old Trafford side after the sack of Jose Mourinho. according to reports. The Premier League giants sacked Jose Mourinho this morning and announced that ‘a new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season’. United are in the early stages of a ‘thorough recruitment process’ to find Mourinho’s long-term successor, but in the meantime, someone with links to the club is expected to take over in the interim.

That man is widely anticipated to be former United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If that does come to fruition, it is being reported that Phelan, who was formerly Sir Alex Ferguson’s long-term assistant, will join the coaching staff again alongside Solskjaer. Phelan featured as a player for United from 1989 to 1994 went on to work with the club as a coach.

He left for pastures new in 2013, coaching Norwich City and then the Tigers. The 56-year-old took over from Steve Bruce at City on the eve of the 2016/17 campaign and led the club to two consecutive wins to start the Premier League campaign, only to endure a poor run which led to his departure when Marco Silva arrived at the KCOM Stadium in January 2017.
