Arsene Wenger To Manchester United: Latest Update After Mourinho Sack

But the Red Devils will not be about to approach ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger over the vacancy.

Manchester United today axed Mourinho after two-and-a-half years in charge of the club.

The Old Trafford side sit 19 points off league leaders Liverpool, to whom they lost 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

United are still in the Champions League but the chances of a top-four finish this season look slim.

And the club have decided to act before Christmas by firing Mourinho.

Michael Carrick is tipped to be given the manager role in a caretaker capacity until the end of the season.

But the search for a new boss is now underway.

Wenger is out of work since leaving Arsenal after 22 years in charge last term.

The Frenchman has admitted he is keen to return to management and ideally wants to be in the hot-seat at a club come New Year’s Day.

But a move to Manchester United appears not to be on the cards.

According to the BBC, Wenger may well be on a list of out-of-work managers but that doesn’t mean he’s being considered for the United post.

Wenger enjoyed two decades of battles with United, during which time his Arsenal side won the title at Old Trafford and also suffered a humiliating 8-2 defeat.

Zinedine Zidane is seen as the most likely contender to take up the reins at Manchester United.

The ex-Real Madrid boss is out of work since leaving the Bernabeu after a third straight Champions League triumph in the summer.

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with the job, although Spurs would fight hard to keep the Argentine in north London.

Antonio Conte and Laurent Blanc are both looking for work and could be attracted by United.

But appointing Conte would require the club to cover the remainder of his contract with Chelsea, which is valued at £9m a season and expires next summer.
