There was drama at the Nairobi Hospital grounds on Friday afternoon as the hospital’s board attempted to forcefully remove CEO Gordon Odundo.

Odundo took over as CEO less than a year ago, years after former Health CS Cleopa Mailu left the hospital.

The struggle ensued as Hospital lawyers attempted to issue the CEO with the dismissal letter.There has been disquiet at the hospital over deterioriating standards that was blamed on the new CEO.

Boardroom wars at Nairobi Hospital intensified yesterday as the board finally sent the CEO, Mr Gordon Odundo, on a 90-day leave.

In an unsigned and undated statement, the board said the decision was to “allow the completion of the ongoing forensic audit.”

Photos of the CEO’s office locked with a huge chain also emerged at the premier city hospital as the embarrassing boardroom fight with the CEO spilt over to the public.

It was revealed on Saturday that that the board met with the staff of the hospital who have openly criticised the board over the way they have handled the CEO’s issue.

The forced leave, according to the board, takes effect tomorrow (Monday) “and includes his annual leave as had been approved by the chairman.”

The CEO was accused of making controversial hires to key hospital departments. One such appointment was that of Timothy Otieno Odundo, allegedly the CEO’s nephew, as the ICT Director.

The Hospital’s new Finance Director Anthony Mburu is also said to be Odundo’s brother-in-law.

Insiders at the hospital also alleged that the scrapping off of overtime dues for nurses and support stuff had demotivated the hospital’s personnel leading to the compromised quality of services.

Also at the centre of the intrigues was also the sacking of two senior administrators.

Sources at the hospital have revealed the audit being referred to ought to have been done as it covered the period 2013-2016, partly when former Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopas Mailu was the CEO.
