Mystery of couple found dead in separate beds shocks residents

Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of an elderly man and woman were discovered at a property on Shauri Yako Estate in Homa Bay town. Officers were called to the scene just after 8.30am but at this stage it is not clear how the pair died.As is routine in such circumstances a forensic examination is expected to be conducted .

According to the neighbour, the two were found lying on separate beds.

According to their landlord Joseph Onyiego, the two have been drinking a lot lately and fought a lot.

The neighbor told reporters that Mancha gave his wife Kamire Ksh.200 to buy food but instead she went to a changaa drinking den where she spent all the money only to return home drunk and without food.

Police are still unsure at this stage as to the cause of death but rea assistant chief Jacktone Olielo however said that the couple is suspected to have committed suicide by consuming poison since there was foam oozing from their mouths.

At the moment in time police don’t consider any third party involvement in the deaths and that there is no risk to the public. The next of kin have been notified.

There was no suicide note reported

Although the number of suicide cases has been rising since 2008, the data show the lowest incidents were recorded in 2010 at 75 cases.

The report also shows that more men are likely to commit suicide than women. Out of the 421 suicide cases in 2017, 330 involved men.The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that close to 800,000 people commit suicide every year, which means one person every 40 seconds. Many more attempt suicide, WHO adds.

The World Population Review ranks Kenya at position 114 among 175 countries with the highest suicide rate.

The world Population Review in its survey states that Kenya’s suicide rate is at least 6.5 suicides per 100,000 people, a figure echoed by World Health Organisation.

The countries leading in suicide rates include South Indian island nation of Sri Lanka with 35.3 suicides per 100,000 people, the eastern Europe country of Lithuania (32.7 suicides per 100,000 people) and South Korea in east Asia (28.3 suicides per 100,000 people).
