Former Manchester United defender and now Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has revealed to his fellow pundit Jamie Carragher that the Red Devils only had two world class players during his time there.
Neville spent 19 years at Old Trafford under the stewardship of one of the greatest managers of all time in Sir Alex Ferguson and he played alongside some absolutely fantastic players such as Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. However, Carragher has now revealed in his column in The Telegraph that Neville only believes two players he played with at United were truly world class.
Of course, one of those players is five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo but the other may come as a bit of a surprise to United fans who are used to praising their legendary attacking players. It was five-time Premier League winner and Danish giant Peter Schmeichel who Neville picked out for Carragher.
Carragher wrote: “Gary Neville once told in me he felt he only ever played with two genuinely world class players in his Manchester United career. One was Cristiano Ronaldo. The other was Schmeichel. That is how fundamental he was to United’s success.”
Carra was on the topic of goalkeepers, comparing Liverpool’s Alisson to United’s David De Gea ahead of this weekend’s huge clash which could see Liverpool lose their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
A good goalkeeper can win you league titles as Neville found out with Schmeichel between the sticks behind him and Carragher was keen to talk about how key Alisson is to Liverpool’s success. He has the best save percentage in the Premier League this season, having saved 85.7% of shots aimed at him and remarkably has conceded just six times in the league.
Neville’s comments may get him in a bit of bother with his ‘Class of 92’ mates…
