It’s a sad day for the Ethiopian people as they mourn the death of Former President, Girma Wolde-Giorgis who has died today at the age of 94. There has not been any official report as to what may have caused the death of the Ethiopian veteran but sources reveal that the late Girma has had his share of health problems in recent years, including hospitalizations for chronic bronchitis and used a wheelchair for several years.
Girma Wolde-Giorgis has had a long and successful life that involved being an active development in civic venture and government service, including serving as president of Ethiopia for twelve years, between 2001 to 2013.
In recent years Girma had been active in efforts to foster reconciliation between former foes Ethiopia and Eritrea who declared an end to two decades of hostility in July.
The Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed sent his message of condolence to the family of Girma on his social media platforms and describe the former President as a man who possessed an exceptional sense of service and determination for his country.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of H.E. Girma Wolde-Giorgis who served as FDRE President from 2001 to 2013. H.E. President Girma Wolde-Giorgis served the FDRE Government for twelve years as President and has performed various state duties throughout the country in different capacities for many years. President Girma rendered his service to people and country through his knowledge and experience with an exceptional sense of service and determination, making him a role model for many. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of H.E. President Girma Wolde-Giorgis and to the People of Ethiopia,” said the Ethiopian Prime Minister.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy further said that H.E. President Girma will be laid to rest in a state funeral adding that details will be shared soon through a national committee that has been set-up to oversee the memorial service.
Girma was born on 28 December 1924 during the reign of Zewditu and has now died few weeks before he could celebrate his 95th birthday.
