Mourinho tells Klopp and Liverpool that ‘trophies matter’

Jose Mourinho believes “trophies matter” – particularly for clubs who “have the potential to fight for” them.

Mourinho has added two trophies to his burgeoning collection as a manager while at Manchester United.

He faces Liverpool on Sunday, with Jurgen Klopp yet to win a single piece of silverware since being appointed manager at Anfield in October 2015.

Mourinho, who accused Liverpool of “trying to buy the title” in August, has laid down the challenge to his rival.

Asked whether silverware is important, Mourinho replied: “I don’t know, it depends on the way you approach it

“I think trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy.

“I think sometimes to just say is not very intelligent, but when you have the potential, you have nothing to hide, you know from day one your potential and your desire has a relation with the potential because to say ‘we want to win’ – everyone can say that but another is to say the potential in a way you have.

“But I think Jurgen told already they want to win the Premier League, it is their objective.”
