Is there anything that can dampen the spirits of embattled Migori Governor Okoth Obado?

Despite facing grave charges ranging from murder to corruption, Migori County Chief Okoth Obado seem to be winning hearts left, right and center.

The governor was yesterday present during the launch of the Universal Healthcare pilot programme in Kisumu with his arrival exciting members of the public who were seeing him for the first time since his release by the High Court in October.

Mr Obado spent more than a month at the Industrial Area remand in Nairobi following his arrest in connection with the killing of his girlfriend Sharon.

The governor had earlier signed the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) legal agreement on behalf of Migori County.

The event which took place at the LREB Secretariat at Prosperity House in Kisumu was witnessed by the LREB Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya and chief executive Abala Wanga.

Governor Obado lauded the LREB efforts while also stressing the need to improve sugarcane farmers’ plight in the region.

Migori County became county number four to have passed the LREB bill that seeks to give the bloc a legal grounding.

His signing coincided with a meeting of the sugar task force which will be running for two weeks in a bid to revamp the ailing sugar industry.

Mr Obado is one of the members of the task force which was formed by Agriculture and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri through the directive of the President.

Mr Obado  is facing murder charges over the killing of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno and her unborn child. The governor is also facing charges for allegedly possessing illegal guns and engaging in graft.
