Cristiano Ronaldo is famous for being one of the most ruthless players in the world in front of goal but his desperation for goals was taken to another level last night as he prevented his teammate Paulo Dybala from bagging one of the best goals in the competition this season.

In the 93rd minute of the game, with Juventus trailing 2-1 to Young Boys, Dybala fizzed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box and ran off celebrating the equaliser. However, what the Argentine had failed to notice is that his teammate Cristiano Ronaldo had tried to get his head onto the shot from an offside position.

Inexplicably, Ronaldo with his back to goal attempted to head the ball towards goal. It is difficult to confirm whether he actually got a touch or not but his leap towards the ball was enough to interfere with play and for the linesman to raise his flag.

That meant Juve fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat which could have cost them top spot in the group if Manchester United were not so flaming awful. United lost 2-1 in Valencia when a win would have taken them top of the group and an easier knockout draw.

Ronaldo failed to score in all three of his group stage away games and has only bagged one goal so far in the tournament, against his former club, but he has fallen way short of his usual standards in this competition.

Football fans were quick to stick the boot in on social media, calling it ‘typical’ and claiming the Portuguese superstar was ‘greedy’.

The knockout stages are where he comes alive though and he could still have a big impact on who wins this tournament at the end of the season. Who would rule out Cristiano Ronaldo lifting this trophy once again in May…
