Chelsea captain free to join Arsenal

Following reports linking Gary Cahill with a move to Arsenal, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has spoken about the future of the skipper noting his fate is in his own hands.

Cahill has been a peripheral figure at Chelsea this season with the arrival of Maurizio Sarri limiting his playing time. David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger have been the preferred center back pairing under Sarri.

Reports are also linking Cahill to a reunion with his former manager Jose Mourinho as Manchester United aim to put an end their defensive crisis in the January transfer window.

In a press conference ahead of the Vidi clash in the UEFA Europa League, Sarri was asked if he would allow Cahill to join Arsenal, “I respect him very much because he won everything with this club, so I have to respect him. Then I have to do my job. Every day I have to choose, for every match I have to choose.

“For me it’s not easy to put him on the bench. Because maybe he’s the best of our defenders inside the box, but I have to think that our center-backs usually play about 100-110 balls in the match. So I need defenders very technical. I don’t know.

“Of course it is not my decision, the problem is up to him and up to the club. He’s in the last year of the contract and so of course he has to decide for a new contract here or for a new contract with another club.

“You know very well that for the over 30s the club usually offers only one year of contract and so if he has an offer of three years, of course he can decide for something else. It doesn’t depend if I’m sentimental or not.”

Would you love to see him at Arsenal?
