Over 300 families displaced by floods in Ahero

When it rains in Ahero, it pours. With the ongoing rains all around the country, floods have displaced over 300 families at Ombaka village in Ahero after a heavy downpour last night.

The flash floods which occurred last night forced residents to abandon their homes in the middle of the night and camp at a local school.

One resident of Ombaka village, Michael Okeyo said that the situation could become worse as the area is prone to floods during the rainy season. The displaced families affected by the flush floods are now appealing to the government to help them get food and other essential commodities.

The incident comes a day before President Uhuru Kenyatta’s plan to visit the area on Thursday, December 13.  Uhuru is expected to launch the Universal Health Care programme in Kisumu tomorrow before visiting Bondo and addressing roadside rallies.

Western Kenya has always been a victim of floods whenever the country experiences heavy downpour. In April this year, over 6,000 persons were homeless and three others died after the floods that affected Nyando, Ahero, Muhoroni and Nyamasaria.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier announced that some parts of the country would experience near-average rainfall in the month of December. The floods witnessed in Ahero are contrary to predictions by the Met department which said that Kisumu county would receive depressed rainfall.

The rains in parts of Nyanza, Western, North Rift counties and Central highlands including Nairobi are expected to cease during the third to fourth week of December.

What do you think needs to be done to ensure that such areas are not affected by floods every time it rains?
