Harry Kane makes bold Champions League claim after reaching last 16

Harry Kane insists Tottenham are genuine Champions League contenders after proving they can go toe-to-toe with European heavyweights.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has now masterminded big results against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus in the past two seasons.

Kane believes they showed against Barcelona they can compete with the best and is determined to turn the new White Hart Lane into a fortress like Anfield.

England captain Kane said: “We’ve had good results, especially away from home in the Champions League. Juventus, Real Madrid, but this was all-or-nothing.

“We had to perform or we were going out of the competition. We didn’t win the game but I think we did more than enough to go through.

“There isn’t a bigger game than Barcelona away. We know if we get them again, maybe in the later stages, we played Juve last year and Real Madrid last year and done well.

“We know it’s in there, we spoke about earlier it’s time to step it up and show we can do it in the knockout stages. Who knows how far we can go. It’s about belief. We’ve done the hard bit of getting through the group. It’s trying to get as far as we can.

“We’ve proved that in the Premier League how well we’ve done. We spoke before and not many people were talking about Tottenham in the Premier League, we get on with out job, tick over until the New Year and after Christmas and give it a push.

“Champions League is the same. A lot of people were writing us off after three games, we’ve come out of that and showed people the character we’ve got in this team it’s important we give it a big push for the rest of the competition.

“I think the big teams in Europe will show us respect. I think we’ve shown over the last few years that we’ve earned respect amongst the big teams in Europe. That’s the difference between us and the Barcelonas and the Madrids and the Juves.

“They win a lot of titles year after year and that’s where we want to get. The only way to do that is prove ourselves in the big games. But for sure I think teams respect us and whoever we play in the next round will know they have a tough game ahead of them.”

Tottenham now go into Monday’s Champions League draw and the club remain confident they will be in the new stadium by the time of the knock-out stages next year.

Kane believes that can give them even more of an edge going into the last 16 as he also praised Pochettino as one of the best managers in the world.
