Sonko reveals the venue for Jamhuri Day celebrations

Kenya is finally turning 55 years old tomorrow, and everyone has been anticipating for this big day. After the introduction of devolution, the government resolved to be holding national holidays from different counties. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko said that the 55th Jamhuri Day celebrations will be held at the Nyayo stadium in Nairobi.

The event that is marked every December 12 will begin as early as 8am on Thursday.

“We welcome all Nairobi residents and Kenyans at large to mark this Independence Day by coming to the stadium early enough,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will officiate the ceremony.

Last year, the ceremony was held at the Moi International Sports centre, Kasarani.

Jamhuri is Swahili for republic and as such Jamhuri Day is also known as Republic Day or Independence Day.

It is a public holiday that marks two events. It celebrates Kenya becoming a republic on December 12, 1964, and also marks Kenya’s independence from the United Kingdom a year earlier on December 12, 1963.

The day is celebrated with many events such as feasts, political speeches and parades, all of which celebrate the country’s cultural heritage.

In 2017, the opposition, led by Raila Odinga, boycotted the event after the disputed General Election that it felt had been compromised.
