Liverpool fans won’t like what Napoli’s Dries Mertens remembers from his last trip to Anfield

Hitting it where it hurts the most.Well Played. It’s just a few hours to go before Liverpool take on Napoli at Anfield.

Liverpool, famed for their glorious Champions League nights under the floodlights, need another big result tonight.

Liverpool have problems qualifying for the knockout stages after losing all three away matches in the group.

The Reds need to beat Napoli 1-0 or by at least two clear goals to progress.

What Dries Mertens remembers from his last trip to Anfield. Belgian striker Dries Mertens has spoken to the Times before Liverpool game.

Mertens has played away at Liverpool once before. That was eight years ago in the Europa League when he was a Utrecht player.

That match finished 0-0.

In talking about what he remembers from that occasion, Mertens has recalled the following about Liverpool:

My strongest memory is that they have a sign saying ‘This is Anfield’ and everyone was talking about it, so I was thinking it’s very big, you know.

I came through the tunnel and I asked, ‘Where is the thing?’ and they said you missed it and I hadn’t noticed it.

So, in the second half, I’m looking at this small thing and asking, ‘Is this so special?’

Mertens also had disparaging remarks about what he remembers of the atmosphere at Anfield.

Asked if the atmosphere was special he replied:

They had a special price for children, so maybe not.
