Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) has warned the University of Nairobi’s (UoN) attempt to list defaulting students on its platform stating that it would be opposed.

The cash-strapped institution had, on Monday, threatened to forward 500 names of graduates who it claimed owed the varsity a collective sum of more than Kshs200 million.

UoN had claimed that the students, who attended the institution on a self-sponsored programme, had declined to settle their fee arrears. The bureaus, however, slammed the institution’s attempt explaining that it did not list providing goods and services as its core business.

UoN Deputy Vice-Chancellor Isaac Mbeche further threatened that the University would publish the names of those who still owed them alongside with the amount in daily newspapers.

“If they do not respond again, we will now refer them to credit reference bureau for action,” remarked Mbeche.

The University has, in the recent past, been facing serious financial problems caused by a drop in student enrollment and reduced state funding. This has prompted the university to cut costs through mandatory layoffs and freezing new hires.

The Bureau explained that for UoN’s application to be considered, they would first need to apply through the Central Bank of Kenya and it would be hard for the CBK to approach.

“Its application will certainly be rejected. The university’s core business is not offering goods and services on credit,” explained Sam Omukoko, the managing director of Metropol.
