Murder in the family continues to be a problem in Kenya today as evidenced by number of reported murder cases in family unit continues to increase. Often, we hear of domestic violence that involves spouses killing each other but now, a new trend is rocking the love boat in a very tragic manner.
This new trend which involves parents killing their children is one that has raised eyebrows and exposed rot in society that ought to be addressed.
Residents of Otonglo area in Kisumu County are today reeling from shock after a 26-year-old woman identified as Rukia Wasuna, today set her house on fire killing herself and her children when she learned of her husband’s plans to bring in a new wife.
Rukia Wasuna reportedly locked herself and her two kids, aged 6 and 3, inside the house before setting it on fire.
Confirming the incident, Central Kisumu Location Chief Simon Osege Orwa said that preliminary investigations showed that the woman’s action was as a result of a domestic disagreement.
According to the Mr. Orwa, the woman’s husband was reportedly planning to marry a second wife. After learning about her husband’s plan, Rukia purchased petrol from a nearby petrol station and committed the act.
The Chief further said that the deceased’s husband was away working in Eldoret at the time of the incident. Crime officers later arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies and start probe on the incident that has left many tongue-tied.
Last week in Mombasa county, police have arrested a 30-year old man who allegedly stabbed his two daughters to death at Mshomoroni area in Kisauni Sub-county.
The man identified as James Maina, was this evening arrested at his home shortly after taking away the lives of the two girls aged six and four years. The man was found in the house where the bodies of the children were lying in a pool of blood where one of the girls had been stabbed on the neck while the other on the chest.
Although it is not yet established why the man committed the heinous act, the neighbours who raised alarm said that the man was drunk at the time the incident occurred.
Clearly such cases of parents killing their own blood is getting out of hand. These recent such cases have been attributed to fights over property, drug abuse, and infidelity within the marriage unit. It’s unfortunate that innocent children have been caught in the midst of this drama.
