Before being crowned the World’s Male Athlete of the Year at the 2018 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) awards, Eliud Kipchoge had already exhibited confidence that he would bag the award and also revealed what winning the award would mean to him.

A few hours before the award ceremony, at a Press Conference held at the Le Meridien Hotel, Kipchoge was asked who he thinks would win the award and the response he gave showed confidence that was infectious all around the room.

“Of course Eliud Kipchoge! That’s why I’m here!”, said Kipchoge in response to the question about his prediction.

However, although Kipchoge has not yet spoken since winning the award, the world marathon champion has in the past said what winning the prestigious award would mean for him.

According to Kipchoge, being crowned as the World’s Male Athlete of the Yeas has shown that Kenyans and the entire world not only respect his efforts in athletics but also, have proved to him that they believe in him and his work.

“It means the whole world will be believing my story,” he said.

“Believing in my hard work and in what I’m doing for the sport in this world,” he added.

Kipchoge will therefore see the IAAF awards ceremony held in Monaco last night as a validation of his work, his determination and his contribution to the world of sports. In the presence of the IAAF President Sebastian Coe and Albert II, the Prince of Monaco, Kipchoge was crowned the Male World Athlete of the Year in the 2018 IAAF awards.

This achievement has been described by many including the Deputy President William Ruto as no mean feat and will see Eliud Kipchoge’s name go down in the books of history as the second Kenyan to ever win an IAAF award after David Rudisha who won the award some 14 years ago.

What do you think the IAAF award means for Kipchoge and Kenya as a country?
