Ian Wright hopes Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho starts Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay as part of his defence “to prove a point” to the club’s hierarchy.

The Red Devils started their last match against Southampton with a three-man defence but the unorthodox system struggled as Mourinho‘s men found themselves two goals down early on.

United will face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening in the Premier League as they look to return to better form after a defeat and two draws in their last three league outings.

The club find themselves eight points off fourth-placed Arsenal, with Unai Emery’s men currently on a 19-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

“I’m not interested in United’s set-up, I only pray to God that Mourinho will play Matic and McTominay at the back to prove a point,” Wright told his official YouTube channel.

“I hope that he then has a go at one of his star players, calls him a virus. I hope they do all those things. What I’m really pleased about is I’m worried about what Arsenal will do, we’ll deal with what United have to do.

“They’ve got players we have to fear but I feel we’ve got a manager that is so meticulously prepared for what’s coming that apart from those little mistakes.

“Maybe someone like [Shkodran] Mustafi or Sokratis [Papastathopoulos], the free-kick he gave away then they scored, the goalie should have done better with the Eric Dier goal – those little mistakes we need to eradicate.

“I’m not worried about what Man Utd can do, I think we can do just as much and more.”
