National Transport and Safety Authority has today sent a stern warning to public service vehicle operators who randomly hike fare by choice.
Ever since the reinstating of the Michuki laws as well as during the Matatu CBD ban which was called off yesterday, some matatus have made this as an excuse to hike fare prices.
The National transport and safety authority noted that they have received complaints by members of the public regarding exploitation through arbitrary increase of fare by PSV operators.
In the press statement NTSA highlighted the law that governs the issue of fare prices and urged the PSV operators to abide by that.
“Section 30 (3) (a) of the National Transport and Safety Authority Act No. 33 of 2012, states as follows;
(3) Subject to the provisions of this Act, the Authority may attach to a road service licence such conditions as it may consider fit for the purposes of ensuring that –
(a) The fares imposed for the carrying of passengers are reasonable and ensure fair competition within the transport industry;”
NTSA also stated that arbitrary increase of fares is therefore contrary to the above provision.
They also warned that hiking of fare prices will lead to revocation of their road service license should the Authority receive a report of such an incidence.
The public has been asked to report incidences of arbitrary increase of fare through the free NTSA App available on google playstore.
