It’s an extremely proud moment for Kenya as a nation as we made it through to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This is a big deal for the country because it’s the first time in fifteen years that we have managed to qualify for AFCON.

Harambee Stars last graced the continental show-piece in 2004 in Tunisia and have since failed to make a return until now.

The confirmation came following Friday’s Extraordinary meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee in Accra – Ghana to determine the fate of Sierra Leone.

Kenya booked her place in the continental games for the first time since 2004 after Sierra Leone were disqualified from the ongoing AFCON qualifiers following a FIFA ban imposed on the West African nation’s Football Association.

Sierra Leone, who are in Group F of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers alongside Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia have not been able to play their last three matches due to a FIFA ban on their FA. As it stands Kenya tops the group on seven points followed by Ghana with a point-less with Ethiopia a distant third on three points.

Kenya will play the Black Stars of Ghana in March next year to determine who runs away with the group as the two teams are already through.  Harambee Stars, who have been nominated for the Team of The Year Award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), beat Ghana 1-0 at home, drew 0-0 away to Ethiopia before hammering them 3-0 in the return leg to qualify.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa confirmed that Kenya will play at least three build-up matches, including a tie against Ivory Coast, in France.

“We need about Ksh. 200 million to prepare the team for AFCON. We have a game with Ghana still to play and after that, we’ll camp in France in May, play at least three friendlies before we go to AFCON,” said Mwendwa.

Do you think the government is doing enough to support Harambee Stars and other football teams in the country?
