Early Christmas comes early for Nairobi Pickpockets, all thanks to Mike Sonko

Nairobi is a dangerous city. As a Nairobian, you can either die from a policeman’s stray bullet, a matatu accident. But the most feared lot in the city are the pickpockets and the muggers.

Recently, the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) released the names of the most feared pickpockets in the city, who are so daring to rob people in broad day light.

Now imagine the Christmas that these thugs are having, as the Matatu ban takes effect. On Monday, a picture went viral of a crowded footbridge in Ngara.

People were moving like cows going to a cattle dip, or worse a slaughter house. Pickpockets thrive in such areas. There are some people who walked from Ngara to Railways, only to reach Railways and realise they didn’t have their wallets, meaning no fare. So they had to walk all the way to their destinations.

Governor Mike Sonko means well with his move to ban Matatus from accessing the CBD. Our public transport sector is worse than chaotic and needs an overhaul. But in doing so, he has overlooked a lot of things, like security for example.

People are going to loss phones, money and even themselves.
