The Chinese nationals who were arrested in Mombasa will now have to suffer a little bit longer with other Kenyans in prison after a Mombasa court denied them bail.

Li Gen, Li Xiaowu and Sun Xin, are accused of offering Inspector Andrew Warui and his team Ksh. 500,000 as an inducement to influence an ongoing criminal investigation in their favour.

Mombasa Chief Magistrate Julius Nang’ea today ruled that the three will remain behind bars arguing that they are foreign nationals and are therefore a flight risk. The prosecution had previously opposed their request for bail saying that they were likely to interfere with the case since they were already arrested while attempting to bribe officers in order to manipulate investigations.

The suspects’ lawyer had earlier argued that the three were ready to deposit their passports with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and ready to report to Mombasa SGR police post everyday if called upon but the Magistrate did not want to hear any of it.

Magistrate Nang’ea directed the case to come up for mentioning on December 10.

Do you support the Magistrate’s decision to hold the three in custody?
