Who’s to blame in the Malindi aircraft crash?

Trainee plane 5Y-NFF after it crashed near Malindi Airport on November 29, 2018. /ALPHONCE GARIA trainee pilot narrowly escaped death after a light aircraft he was flying crashed into an electric post  injuring one person after it failed to ascend high enough during take-off.

Locals who witnessed the accident at around 10.30am managed to rescue a pilot trainee from the wreckage.

Confirming the incident, Malindi International Airport manager, Mohamed Karama stated that the plane, a Cessna 152 failed to achieve the required altitude during take-off causing it to collide with the post in Furunzi area in Malindi.

Karama noted that a pilot trainee who was commandeering the plane was rescued and taken to Tawfique Hospital for treatment.

“The investigation team has already begun probing the cause of the accident,” Karama stated.

He further noted that the rescue operation was conducted smoothly with the fire brigade collaborating with the police efficiently.

Describing the moments before the crash, Karama disclosed, “The pilot was trying to divert the aircraft towards a swamp after it failed to climb high before hitting an electric post and fell on a house.”

“The aircraft which belongs to Kenya School of Flying was heading to Ukunda in Kwale County after taking off at 10.30am,” he said.

Police have taken up the matter with a view to establishing what caused the crash.

In September 2016, another light aircraft with two people on board crash-landed in a primary school in Malindi, Kilifi County.Luckily though there were no serious injuries.

The aircraft was said to have developed a mechanical problem while airborne.Unconfirmed reports indicated the instructor and his trainee were on a training mission when the incident happened.
