Jose Mourinho claims David De Gea wants to stay at Manchester United beyond the end of the season.

The Spaniard’s contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer and he has yet to agree terms on a new deal.United are expected to take up the 12-month option on De Gea’s current contract to protect their asset amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

However, Mourinho believes the 28-year-old and his representatives want to thrash out fresh terms.

“I know he wants to stay,” said the United boss after Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Young Boys.

De Gea was hailed as the best keeper in the world by his manager after the Spaniard’s amazing second-half save was instrumental in his side qualifying for the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

“Without David’s save, there would be no winning goal,” added Mourinho. “He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, a winning club you need the best goalkeeper in the world.

“You also need some other best players [in their position] in the world, in this case we only have the best goalkeeper in the world.”
