Revealed: Raila’s backyard is the more informed on gender bill

Debate on the two-thirds gender rule has been the talk of the day as Members of parliament meet to vote, but how aware are you about the bill? According to the latest research released on Wednesday, ODM leader Raila Odinga’s Kisumu backyard is the County with more awareness about the Aden Duale sponsored gender bill.

Trends and Insights for Africa(TIFA), an Africa based research organisation has rated Kisumu residents as the most informed on matters related to the Gender Bill.

The county was rated at 84 per cent followed by Kiambu at 50 per cent; Nairobi and Mombasa county tied at 46 per cent.

TIFA research has experience in the development of research-led communication strategies. Its communication strategies include situation analysis, audience segmentation, theoretical framework and communication.

On the extent of support for the Bill, Kisumu leads at 84 per cent, Mombasa 81 per cent, Kiambu 80 per cent while Nairobi has 79 per cent.

The survey was conducted between October 17, 2018, to November 5, 2018.

The study further revealed that 59 per cent of men are aware of the two-thirds gender rule while only 48 per cent of female gender are aware of it.

However, more women, about 87 per cent, are in support of the Bill compared to the males at 76 per cent.

MPs will today endorse or reject the Bill that seeks to increase the number of women representation in Parliament – Senate and National Assembly.

The legislation requires the support of 233 MPs (two thirds of members) to pass. If it sails through the floor of the House and is signed by the President, it will be effective after the 2022 General Election.
