Condoms or painkillers? What do Embu County hospitals need most?

Some of the leaders in Kenya have their priorities mixed up and their lack of insight on important issues in society has seen them come under fire from members of the public.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora has today been faulted by Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for supplying condoms worth Ksh. 30 million to public hospitals instead of providing medical drugs which the hospitals are in dire need of.

Minority Leader and MCA for Kiambere Ward, Leonard Mwaniki said that Governor had recently flagged off a truck purportedly containing medicine but on opening the consignments, hospitals only found condoms.

“It is sad that residents are in need of drugs but the county has the audacity to ferry a canter full of condoms to the health facilities,” said Mr. Mwaniki.

Speaking at the County Assembly while contributing to a motion on the status of the oxygen generating plant at the Embu Level Five hospital, the Kiambere MCA lamented that the county had gone to a great length to oversupply hospitals with condoms but never made any attempt to supply basic painkillers.

Kagaari South MCA Robert Ireri supported the Minority Leader saying that he had seen several boxes full of red condom sachets at Ugweri Hospital yet the medical facility was facing an acute shortage of medicine.

Nominated MCA Agnes Wanjiru however infuriated Mr. Leonard Mwaniki with her remarks when she said condoms were also medical supplies which even the Minority Leader used quite often when the need arose.

She further explained to the temporary Speaker Nathan Mwari that she was opposed to the vilification of the supply and use of condoms.

Mavuria MCA Ngari Mbaka appreciated the provision of condoms in public hospitals, adding that the numerous cases of teenage pregnancies witnessed during the just concluded national examinations would have been averted if the youngsters had used contraceptives.

On her part, Nominated MCA Edna Muisyo urged the Speaker to have the debate of condoms expunged from the order paper, saying it was would tarnish the image of the County Government of Embu.
