With Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to bring a new goalscorer to Old Trafford in the next window, Manchester United’s main January transfer target has now reportedly been revealed.

The Portuguese boss is believed to be ready to step up his interested in West Ham United forward Marko Arnautovic, according to the Daily Mail.

Mourinho’s first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku is struggling to find the back of the net this season, with his last goal coming on 15 September. United’s scoring woes once again came to show on Saturday, when they failed to beat Crystal Palace at home for the first time in Premier League history, collecting just a point from the 0-0 draw.

As a consequence, Mourinho wants to the club to sign Arnautovic in January, but a move will not be easy as West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is eager to keep hold of the Austrian star.

West Ham’s board have ruled out selling the influential striker.

West Ham signed Arnautovic from Stoke for £23m in July 2017 but remain determined to keep hold of him, despite the chance to double their money.

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini insists Arnautovic is “happy” at the club, despite comments from Arnautovic’s brother and agent, Danijel, who said “he needs to play at a top team.”

He has been on United’s list of potential offensive targets since the end of last season but his estimated value, age and maverick character are all against him.

Arnautovic’s brother and agent, Daniel, was widely quoted last week as having Everton and Chelsea both interested but they all have similar reservations.Mourinho is set to launch a January bid of more than £50million for the imposing Austrian forward.

“He had a very good second half of last season, now Marko needs to have a complete season,” Pellegrini said. “He is a top player and maybe he can reach a higher target than he has done at the moment.

“Because of that I don’t think it is a good idea to go immediately to a big team because he would maybe not start every game like he does here. With his performances I am absolutely sure he will have a very good season.

“Maybe we will see what will happen in the future but right now his mind and his commitment is with West Ham.”
