Why officers are holding boys who insulted Amina in Children’s cell

While the internet may be burdening users whose accounts get hacked or cyber bullied, there are those constantly responsible for their stress. Social media for sure has revealed plenty of celebrations that ended up being crime scenes.

Students from Ambira High school who were seen in a leaked video insulting  the Education CS  Ambassador Amina Mohamed and the  CS Interior Matiang’i appeared before Senior Resident  Magistrate Gladys Odhiambo.

The students were arrested in Ugunja and Kisumu after the video went viral. The investigating officers asked the court that the students be detained at Ugunja police station for a period not exceeding 7 days  for him to conduct age assessment of the boys as well as obtain the objects from Nairobi.

The magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and ordered the minors detained at Ugunja Police Station until December 3.

“The application to hold the suspects at Ugunja police station for purposes of completing investigations is merited and unopposed,” she said.

“The suspects have indicated that they are all minors and I therefore order that they be held at the children’s cells.”

The boys each agreed to remain in custody for the seven days to allow police to complete investigations before they can take plea. The police said that they were yet to take statements from the affected cabinet  secretaries.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was angered by the videos from the boys after they completed their KCSE exams admitting to have cheated and hurling insults  at the CSs. He ordered that  strict action be taken against the students  so that they can know that they were not above the law.

In the 30-second clip that went viral on Friday, the students who seemed to be celebrating completion of their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams said they cheated despite strict invigilation and tight security during the tests.

They then hurled unprintable insults at the two Cabinet secretaries as they burnt learning materials.

“Shule huisha, shule huisha, tumeiba, tumeiba (this is the end of school, this is the end of school, we cheated, we cheated,” shouted the candidates.

After investigations are complete the students will be charged with Exam cheating and unlawful conduct amounting to breach of peace.
