“Unaninyima pesa, najinyonga nakufa!” teacher commits suicide

Can you die just because someone denied you some cash? This is really worrying! The incidences of people committing suicide in Kenya have been on the high rise, with the latest being this of a Mwingi  senior teacher. On Sunday, the teacher  committed suicide in Mwingi, Kitui county after her husband allegedly refused to give her money. Can that really cost your life?

Well, the 43-year-old was found dangling from the roof of their bedroom at around 9am on Sunday. She was still breathing at that time.

Her husband Bernard Musyoka attempted to save her by cutting the rope. The woman died as she was being rushed to Mwingi Level 4 hospital.

He said his wife, a teacher at Kakunike Primary school, waited until their children and the house help left the house then hanged herself.

Police visited the scene and took statements from the teacher’s husband. The body was taken to Mwingi Level 4 hospital mortuary.

In September, another senior worker at WaterPrice Coopers (WPC) committed suicide by jumping from the 17th floor of Delta house Towers in Westlands after allegedly undergoing depression.

Early this month, another man was found hanging along outering road at around Allsoaps area, with the reasons of him taking his life remaining unknown. But why do people take their lives?

It’s often difficult to imagine what led a friend, family member, or celebrity to commit suicide. There may be no warning signs, and you may wonder what clues you might have missed. Often, many factors combine to lead to a decision to commit suicide. It is often an act made during a storm of strong emotions and life stresses rather than after careful consideration.

A person may decide to commit suicide when facing a loss or the fear of a loss. These situations can include:

  • Ending a romantic relationship or close friendship
  • Losing a job or being unemployed and unable to find a sufficient source of steady income
  • Finacial problems
  • Losing social position
  • Losing your living situation due to financial reasons or the ending of a relationship
  • Academic failure
  • Losing social or family acceptance due to revealing your sexual orientation
  • Bullying, shaming, or humiliation, including cyberbullying
  • Being arrested or imprisoned
