A 0-0 home draw with Crystal Palace left United languishing in seventh in the Premier League table.

Mourinho’s side are now seven points off the Champions League places and a whopping 14 behind leaders Manchester City. And ESPN claim he will now make a move for Witsel – a player he is said to have admired for some time.

The Red Devils boss is set to be handed a £100m budget in January to overhaul his struggling squad. He was keen to sign him last summer but opted to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52million instead.

However, that move appears to have turned sour and he has not featured at all in any of United’s last three games.

Mourinho was spotted in the stands during Belgium’s recent 2-0 victory over Iceland in the UEFA Nations League. He denied it was a scouting mission and said he was their to support Romelu Lukaku instead.

However, Lukaku did not even play and Mourinho stayed to watch Witsel win his 100th international cap.

Toby Alderweireld also played in that game and Mourinho is understood to be interested in the Tottenham defender. Signing a new centre-back when the January transfer window opens remains a priority.

While the report claims United have no plans to move for Witsel as early as January, they might be able to do a deal for Alderweireld in the winter window.

United were also interested in signing him last summer but their Premier League rivals were demanding more than £60m.

Old Trafford chiefs did not believe that two be value for money but the two clubs could now come to a compromise in January. And the spending might not stop there.

Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar is also a reported target along with Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina.
