Arsenal are on a 16-match unbeaten run but have drawn four of their last five games.

But the Gunners have shown clear signs of improvement under Emery compared to the end of Arsene Wenger’s reign when they finished sixth in the league and lost 11 games away from home last season.

And Sagna believes Emery’s secret is getting the Arsenal players to work harder.

“It is strange. From one year to another, it is totally crazy,” said Sagna. They enjoyed the summer to clear their minds and come back stronger. It seems like they give even more on the pitch and it is working for them. I am so happy to see the club back to its best. Arsenal is in my heart, it is my club.

“I was a bit sad to see them struggling the way they did the past two years. I was sad to see Arsene Wenger leaving when he did.

“He gave his life for the club. It can’t always be perfect and people were a bit harsh with him. Arsenal became Arsenal because of him. He was the man.

“But now I am happy because the players are happy and they seem to be sticking to the project.”

Speaking in an interview with Spanish side Marca, Emery said Arsenal had lost their defensive structure under Arsene Wenger.

“I met once with [Wenger], and little else. I respect him a lot, but no matter how much info he gave me, I had to change things,” Emery said.

“I told the players: ‘We started at kilometre zero’. Even now, four months later, I still say it: ‘We are in the beginning!’.

“Before Wenger arrived, Arsenal celebrated the 1-0 (win) and was based on defensive solidity.

“Then with Arsene, joy was turned into attack, with players of good standing, and the perfect combination was ‘The Invincibles’.

“But over time, only technical quality and offensive freedom were taken care of, and the team lost the defensive structure.

“What I want is to unite both essences and be more competitive.

“The Arsenal was in decline. We had to stop it and start climbing.”
