Have Kenyans been feeding on Zebra meat?

Is it legal to domesticate Zebra’s in Kenya? Beyond that can it be eaten as meat? I  see that this raises an online debate as some argue that eating of wild animals is not right.

An online source reveals that as of today there is only one of the three breeds of zebra that can be legally farmed for consumption: the Burchell breed from South Africa. Known to have a somewhat “sweeter than beef” taste, the edible meat comes from the hindquarter of the animal and is very lean.

How safe is your food? Do you know what is in the food that you are eating? Are you ever curious to find out whether the products you are buying are counterfeit or not?

My curiosity rose today after I came across a photo of a man slicing Zebra meat and packing it in a bag. The photo which is of last year January, was revealed by the Mombaa County government watch.

The unconcerned man was spotted butchers a zebra in broad daylight on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

It seems illegal game meat which is unfit for human consumption is finding its way to the butcheries. A man in Naivasha was seen stashing zebra meat in paper bag.

Naivasha is notorious for slaughtering donkeys whose meat is illegally sold to butcheries in as far as Nairobi and Nakuru.

It’s however not clear whether the man was the one who killed the zebra or it had been knocked by a speeding motorist.

Earlier today, on the Nation Breaking News, it was revealed that a Nakuru man was charged with possession of 208kgs of zebra meat without a permit; released on Sh500,000 cash bail.

Probably the same case that  in question addressed a year later. The fact that he had no permit makes it pretty worrying since this might have been what has earned him money over time.

I am sure we all remember the story of the Nakuru man who admitted he had been selling cat meat for the last eight years. James Mukangi said that he had been making a living from selling cat meat samosas to unsuspecting Nakuru residents. Mukangi says he has made over Sh 500,000 through his business.

In Nakuru we have seen it all and it is important to be sure of what we are eating  because the cases of illegal meat selling is on the rise.
