If you watched the Tinga Tinga musical directed by Eric Wainaina and his wife Sheba Hirst, then you will agree that they were unapologetic about pushing the LGBT agenda.

In one of the scenes in the Kenyan children’s musical, the chameleon was a dull, gray and sad creature until it met a butterfly who led it to a very special rainbow. Stepping onto the rainbow, the chameleon instantly metamorphized into a magnificently coloured animal resplendent in reds, yellows, oranges, pinks and greens.

The musical which run for a whole month in Nairobi and two weeks in Broadway, New York used the rainbow flag which is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride and LGBT social movements.

The respected Kenyan musician has now made remarks that could indeed confirm his support for the LGBT community. While delivering his keynote address at the Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases at the Kenya National Theatre, Eric said that he had many gay friends adding that a person’s decision on who to love should not be anyone’s business.

“A lot of our colleagues are gay, who someone chooses to love has nothing to do you, concern yourself with things that do. We have to play our part in defining African present, and future agenda; we can’t let the agenda be decided by the conservative, polyester, oversized suit, bald headed men,” said Eric.

Looks like Eric Wainaina could soon be making enemies with moral cop, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua.

According to the Daima hit-maker, LGBT people have come out of the closet and want to be accepted and respected just like any other human being. He further asked Kenyans to stop conforming to the old ways of life.

“We have to play our part in defining Africa’s present and future agenda. We can’t let the agenda be decided by the conservative, polyester, oversized suit, bald-headed men,” he said.

The Music in Africa Conference For Collaborations, Exchange And Showcases (ACCESS) is a conference that focuses on the business of music however Eric chose the platform to speak about the sensitive subject.

Eric Wainaina was feted with the 2018 Music In Africa Honorary Award at the ACCESS 2018 which he said was a great humbling gesture.

“To be counted worthy of recognition and holder of the 2018 Music In Africa Honorary Award was a humbling and gratifying experience. Thank you,” said Eric on an Instagram post.
